Girl groups and besties from classic teen movies influenced the look for The Princess and her ladies in waiting. “Heathers”, “ Mean Girls”, and “Clueless”, with a smidgen of “The Breakfast Club” too
The Princess: Gold metallic foil rose print on gray with black and white accent brocade bodice with black satin straps, sweetheart neckline, and pointed waistline, boned and lined in gray satin, with zipper closure, worn with detachable ivory satin, gold glitter tulle, and lace leg o’ mutton sleeves, worn with a coordinating skirt with ivory satin, gold glitter tulle, and lace overlay panel, and —it has pockets!
Rosaline: Lavender, green, gold, and copper foil large format damask print brocade on black background strapless corset, boned and lined, with coordinating dirndl skirt with pockets and a lavender sparkle organza over taupe satin overlay panel, worn over a sleek black turtleneck, plus lavender organza raw-edge ruff and cuffs and detachable black brocade puff sleeves. Rosaline is the smart, sensible, but kooky member of “the squad” who is always cold (there’s always one) and with a beret to identify her with Berowne early in the play. She also has pockets!
Maria: Fitted, princess-seamed bodice in gold, silver, black and white chrysanthemun print brocade with detachable white satin, silver tulle, and white lace overlay puff sleeves, worn with coordinating dirndl skirt with white satin, silver tulle, and white lace overlay panel and — yes, pockets!
Katharine: Fitted princess-seamed bodice in lavender, purple, black and silver fan and shell print with detachable full sleeves in silver satin with silver sequin organza overlay, worn with coordinating dirndl skirt with silver satin and silver sequin organza overlay panel, and — you guessed it — pockets!
The ladies requested matching scrunchies as well. The pockets were critical to the plot, when the space-time continuum collapses and past becomes the present, and vice versa. Even in Shakespeare’s time, kids couldn’t live without their cellphones!
